New Delhi. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday stressed the need for immediate reforms in the United Nations (UN). He said that the UN reflects the realities of the world of 1945, not 2025. The need for reform of this global body has now become extremely important.
The External Affairs Minister also said that the reform process is being used to derail the agenda, thereby continuing historical injustice. He cautioned that institutions which cannot adapt to changing realities become irrelevant.
India’s peacekeeping approach is based on ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – Jaishankar
Jaishankar addressed the United Nations Conference of Heads of Troop Contributing Countries (UNTCC 2025) in New Delhi. He said that India’s approach to peacekeeping is rooted in the values of its civilization and is based on the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
The External Affairs Minister said, ‘It is a privilege to address this distinguished group of troop contributing countries, who are protectors and messengers of peace. You reflect the strength of an institution that has stood as a beacon of hope in a conflict-torn world for nearly eight decades – United Nations peacekeeping.”
India is the largest military contributor to UN peacekeeping – Jaishankar
He said, ‘India has consistently advocated justice, dignity, opportunity and prosperity for all societies and people. This is why we believe in multilateralism and international partnerships.” He said India is the largest troop contributor in the world to UN peacekeeping.
Highlighting the challenges of the modern era, Jaishankar said global crises – pandemics, terrorism, economic instability and climate change – demand collaborative and not competitive responses. Sharing his perspective on his recent visit to the UN General Assembly, he said, ‘The UN still reflects the realities of 1945.’
