Punjab and Chandigarh police clashed with each other, there was a ruckus over custody.

Chandigarh: A fight broke out today between Chandigarh Police and Punjab Police personnel. This incident happened near Sukhna Lake in broad daylight on Tuesday, due to which there was a huge commotion there. Punjab Police wanted to take into custody Navneet Chaturvedi, a by-election applicant who has filed nomination for the Rajya Sabha by-election. Chaturvedi is a resident of Rajasthan and is accused of forging signatures of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs. The fight took place when Chandigarh Police was taking Chaturvedi under security cover.

The reason for the fight was the custody of Navneet Chaturvedi. Chaturvedi has named ten AAP MLAs from Punjab as his proposers in his nomination. AAP alleged that Chaturvedi had forged signatures of the MLAs. Due to this allegation, Punjab Police was trying to arrest Chaturvedi. Chaturvedi was under the protection of Chandigarh Police at that time.

When Navneet Chaturvedi was going near Sukhna Lake under the protection of Chandigarh Police, Punjab Police personnel tried to take him into custody forcefully. Chandigarh Police opposed this, due to which there was a tussle between the two police personnel and a huge uproar. Chandigarh Police did not hand over Chaturvedi to Punjab Police.

This incident happened today i.e. 15th October morning, when Navneet Chaturvedi was going under the protection of Chandigarh Police after the scrutiny of his nomination. Punjab Police allegedly intercepted the Chandigarh Police vehicle. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur had to come to the spot and calm down the matter.

The root of this entire controversy is the Rajya Sabha by-election to be held in Punjab. Navneet Chaturvedi, a resident of Rajasthan, has filed nomination for this by-election. Despite an FIR being registered by the Punjab Police on charges of forging signatures, he was given security cover by the Chandigarh Police on a complaint of threat.
