Thiruvananthapuram. Documentary ‘Jalkanya’ on the Indian Navy will premiere on December 4 during the Navy Day Celebrations. It is produced by film producer duo Sanjeev Sivan and Deepti Sivan. He says that this is no less than a special achievement for us.
The special thing is that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other celebrities are expected to attend the premiere. The Indian Navy will organize this year’s Navy Day function at Thiruvananthapuram along the Arabian Sea. Speaking to IANS, Sanjeev said ‘Jalakanya’ is inspired by the Prime Minister’s flagship campaign ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ and celebrates the creativity and courage of young girls across the country.
“This project aims to amplify the voices of youth through cinema as well as strengthen the national message of empowerment and inclusion,” Sanjeev said. Under this initiative, 25 students from naval schools across the country were selected for a five-day intensive filmmaking workshop held in Mumbai. It was conducted by some of the country’s well-known film and music personalities, including Aamir Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Shankar Mahadevan, Javed Jaffrey and A. Shrikar Prasad was included.
Participants were then encouraged to create their own short films reflecting their personal experiences, community issues and aspirations. These creations form the core of Jalakanya, offering a rare glimpse into how young minds view empowerment, equality and change. This documentary is inspired by PM Modi’s campaign ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ which started on January 22, 2015. Over the years it has grown into a nationwide movement that encourages communities to respect and empower daughters.
Sanjeev further said, “Jalkanya is being established as a platform to nurture the next generation of storytellers. It will also salute the people involved in this campaign.” Let us tell you that Sanjeev’s father late Sivan was a National Film Award winner. His late brother Sangeet Sivan had directed superstar Mohanlal’s film Yoddha.
